Guide to Choosing The Best Wedding Florist for you
YES! You’re engaged and completely overwhelmed with becoming an overnight event coordinator, and in need of some inspiration on bouquets & floral installations, Right??! You may be thinking, why the heck would a photographer be blogging about flowers? I get it, but hear me out!
A lot of the time, I am one of the first suppliers you book, after the wedding venue of course! (If you haven’t even got to that stage yet, here’s my Top Wedding Venues Post) and the way I see it, is that you aren’t just booking me to show up on the day, you’re booking me way in advance and it’s my priority to help this whole process and journey as stress free as possible, so you can enjoy ALL OF IT!
Week in, week out. I get to see some incredible creations from florists. They put their heart and soul into creating these masterpieces that have the power to tie the whole vibe together! So it helps to get in there early on in your planning stages to get inspired!
Take some notes and have a chat with a few florists about what you're into, what you're not and most importantly, what's going to be in season... This will also be a good starting point when looking at your wedding colours!
Think Sustainable!
I'm fully on board with sustainable floristry, and keeping these things in mind when you're beginning your chats with florists will ensure you're supporting a small sustainable biz, having access to locally grown in season flowers, AND you know they'll be super fresh too!

”If budget is tight rather than having lots of smaller arrangements go for a statement piece that will wow your guests and will look fabulous on your photos.”
How would you describe your style?
”My signature style is ‘wild garden gathered’ working with mainly outdoor grown flowers and foliages this gives a naturally just picked look to my designs. Outdoor grown flowers have natural bends and give movement and character to arrangements.”
Favourite flower to work with
”The big blousy blooms are wonderful to work with however I really love adding all the textured elements like grasses and seed pods which also make the designs more seasonal. I especially love the smaller dancing flowers too, these all give designs a unique character.”

I would say my style is garden style, working with nature.
Obviously, Favourite flower to work with and incorporate?

Obviously, Favourite flower to work with and incorporate?
”I have so many favourite flowers! It's hard to choose one but up there in my top ten would be: Serruria Florida - they're just so unusual and so delicate! Coral Charm Peony - a pop of colour for any arrangement and I love how they change colour as they get older Quicksand Rose - the Dusky Pink colour is a firm favourite with so many brides and they're so easy to work with”
Jess Austin Designs
Based in and inspired by the dramatically changing landscape of the Peak District. Jess creates floral displays from the most 'show-stopping', large scale pieces to the tiny intricate designs
What’s the most important aspect to you as a Florist? “I would say the most important thing to me is to always keep things fresh and exciting. If you're creating the same wedding flowers every time, everyone is going to get bored of seeing it. I always love putting a new twist on a couples brief and working with them to create unique wedding flowers.”
Best piece of advice you can give a couple?
”The best piece of advice, I would give any couple about their wedding flowers, would be to stay true to themselves. You can get quite caught up in what colours are on trend and I think it's important to go with something you've always loved or something that has meaning to you so that when you look back at your images you don't think "that was very of the time" or you've fallen out of love with the look.”
How would you describe your signature style?
”We create unique and intriguing floral displays, with explosive use of colour, created to compliment what's important to the client.”
Katie Olivier Blooms
Creating captivating installations, inspired by the seasons, textures and smells that flowers bring whilst working with you and your venue to tie everything together. Katie is a true artist!
Striving to be as sustainable as possible, using local flower farms and using no floral foam in displays.
I asked Katie for a few pieces of advice for couples:
What’s the most important aspect to you as a florist?
”I want your flowers to be a reflection of you! Whether you’re having an intimate celebration or huge lavish affair, your flowers should be an extension of your personalities and nailing that is, for me, the most important thing.”
Best piece of advice you can give a couple?
”Trust your florist! Flowers can be a huge part of your day (styling and money wise!) so you need to have faith that your florist will interpret your brief. I don’t specify the flowers that I’ll use; instead I work with my couples to capture the aesthetic and atmosphere they want their flowers to create in their colour scheme. No two weddings are ever the same, even if they have the same colours and the same venue!”
How would you describe your signature style?
”I’d say I’m wildly romantic. It’s all about bringing out your love story through the textures of flowers!”
Obviously, Favourite flower to work with and incorporate?
”I love love love a floaty flower to give lots of movement and to add that extra dimension! In the spring it’s all about the butterfly ranunculus and then chocolate cosmos in the autumn. Also, carnations are really underrated!”
Something every couple needs to know?
”Bud vases aren’t the cheapest option. You need A LOT of them, more than you realise, and there are much better ways to dress a table - bowls and runners are nearly always more cost effective and have a lot more impact!”
